Miami Weekend Begins

May 2, 2026 | 8:00 PM

After a three-week pause, Formula 1 returns in Miami — and the pace has not softened.

Practice 1 remained measured, with teams focusing on data collection and long-run consistency rather than outright performance. As expected, the front of the grid stayed closely matched, with minimal gaps and no clear dominance emerging early.

That balance carried directly into Sprint Qualifying.

With limited sessions and higher pressure, the sprint format leaves little room for error. Across SQ1 and SQ2, the margins remained tight, with several drivers separated by tenths — reinforcing how competitive the field has become.

By SQ3, the fight sharpened.

Lando Norris secured pole with a 1:27.869, delivering the fastest lap of the session and confirming McLaren’s one-lap pace. Kimi Antonelli followed with a 1:28.091, continuing Mercedes’ strong qualifying form. Oscar Piastri placed third (1:28.108), ensuring both McLaren drivers remained at the front.

Ferrari stayed within reach, with Charles Leclerc fourth (1:28.239) and Lewis Hamilton seventh (1:28.618), while Max Verstappen completed the top five (1:28.461) after a steady session.

Further down, Franco Colapinto, Isack Hadjar, and Pierre Gasly completed the top ten, with tight gaps continuing throughout the midfield.

One of the more notable moments came with Fernando Alonso, who was unable to set a representative time, leaving him without a competitive position heading into the sprint.

The results underline a pattern that has defined the season so far — no clear separation at the front, and a field that continues to compress under pressure.

After the break, Miami has not reset the grid.

It has simply continued the fight.
